The foundation of any country is laid at the kitchen table, in the parish hall, at the school gate. Put strong families back at the centre, and the rest of our problems get smaller.
Rebuilding from the kitchen table
The country we want to be starts at the kitchen table.
Strong families build strong children. Children who know they are loved, who know they belong, who know they are seen, grow into adults who can build a country worth living in.
Strong families build strong communities. Every village hall, every parish church, every school PTA, every football team, is held up by the families who turn up. None of it works without strong families behind it.
Britain has stopped investing in either. Family breakdown in the UK is among the highest in the developed world. The Centre for Social Justice estimates it costs the country over £50 billion every year. Community centres have closed. High streets have hollowed out.
Rebuilding starts with all of us.
Volunteer at the school. Help out at the village hall. Stand for your parish council. Speak up at the local meeting. Run for office. The local is how the national hears us. Westminster only listens when the country shows up.
What Sherrie is calling for
- A transferable marriage tax allowance worth at least £1,000 a year — so the tax system stops penalising couples who stay together
- Statutory protection and ring-fenced funding for village halls, community centres, and youth clubs — the infrastructure of belonging
- Family hubs in every constituency offering parenting support, mental health help, and early intervention before crises hit
- Stamp duty relief and housing priority for families with children, so young couples can afford to put down roots near their parents and grandparents
- Paid time off work to serve on parish councils, school governing boards, and PTAs — so civic participation is not just for those who can afford it
